The killing of innocent civilian population in Gaza hurt Israeli cause among youngsters on US campuses. I see a lot of kids wearing kaffeyah kerchiefs on the campuses in Upstate New York (Syracuse and Albany) in solidarity with Pals. Alan Dershowitz, of all people, correctly noticed the dangerous trend of young generation automatically identifying Israelis with "bad guys," together with Bush, Rumsfield, Rush Limbaugh, Sarah Palin and other "uncool" "lame" conservative people who are regarded as obscurantist, anti-youth etc... And Pals are lumped with things cool: Barak Obama administration, Che, health reform, new foreign policy open to the wide world. These feelings are subconscious. And there are very few students willing to identify with Israel, the same way that hardly anybody in 60s and 70s would identify with Apartheid South Africa. These are consequences of occupation. This is somehow unfair, because Hamas social mores are sexist, patriarchal, homophobic, yet Israel is despiced.

Israel's angry, bitter left must reclaim the language of hope

We leftists whine and complain, we only talk about how bleak and hopeless life is in Israel. We alienate all those Israelis whose support we need to bring political change.
