I would also note that the religious exemption as it is in Israel was a product of compromise half a century ago, and made between a very different Israel and an astoundingly different Orthodox population. Israel is simply too small to afford a 100% mercenary army as we have in the US. It must have a draft, and when rich kids go overseas and 'religious' kids discover a need for further religious education as a means of reducing their obligation it has a corrosive effect.
