Despite losing my fathers entire family during the war to the Nazis, I was raised as a Jew and believing in some higher power. My father was raised very religious but after suffering such a devastating loss and surviving Hitler he still wanted his children to know what Judaism was. It is not about keeping kosher, studying Torah, or wearing a Keepah. It is the mere fact that we are Jews, and that our enemies will want to kill us all whether we respect the Torah, or eat unkosher food. Hitler didn't differentiate between religious and non religious, he killed every Jew in sight. The State of Israel is strong because it has to be, not because the Yeshiva buchers and Rabbis are sitting and studying Torah all day long. The men women and children that serve in the armed forces, security services are what keeps Israel around.
