As a film, Lincoln was 90% moderate propaganda, only 10% history. The film invents as much as it relays in order to cast Lincoln and his accomodationist wing of the Republican Party in a particular light. But the reality was different at the time. Had abolition been left to Lincoln, it would never have transpired. He was not the coward that some in his time saw him as, but he was also not the great navigator the movie makes him out to have been. Radical Republicanism and abolitionism were two of the great driving progressive forces in American history. They should not be maligned. n
