We are hardly a Light unto other nations. Our lack of lack of environmental awareness/concern in contrast to Europe and grassroots Canada/US is obscene and shameful. And one day of green living out of 365 adds to our disgrace. However.., there is something very special about the radical simplicity of Yom Kippur which reminds me what Shabbat could be, 72 days of sobriety from capitalist consumer freneticism in which to reconnect with self, others, and creation, and thus, ultimately with G-d. Now that would be a witness to the world! especially if the inherent sobriety would inform and change our weekday lives from sanctioned insanity to grounded peace/SHaLoM and wonder. Imagine!
