all ye who loved Jerusalem! To the west its forests and now ruined villages carved into the hillside (Lifta soon to be an Eyn Hod clone?) to the east its beautiful bare hills. There is a song from the time of the first Aliyot 'We shall clothe her (Israel) in a dress of concrete' - an eyesore even with limestone cladding. Hiking in Israel was always an endurance test, a search for ancient stones, not for living trees and plants. The Society for the Defence of Nature does what it can- but against urban despoilers with their tunnels and so called parks they can do little. And no one does anything for the poor neglected trees which survive here and there along Jerusalem streets, unpruned leafless and a threat to passers by as dead branches break off and fall. You can take the Jews out of the townships (lets not say ghettos) but you cant.....etc.etc. Tragic.
