Never before in Israeli history did a minister show such contempt towards his Prime Minister in public. It is known that Lavon, Defense Minister for PM Moshe Sharett, had contempt for his boss and did not consult him before making important decisions, but this was not expressed in front of the entire world as Lieberman has just done. Whether one agrees with Lieberman's suggested policy or not, he should not be allowed to express his personal opinions when the world takes the occasion to mean that these are Israeli official policies. No way. And more generally, it is not reasonable that one would serve as Foreign Minister if he holds views that are contrary to the main foreign policy thrust of the PM. In 1956, a short time before the '56 war, Sharett was replaced as Foreign Minister because he disagreed with the policies pushed by Ben-Gurion. (BG and Sharett were not even contemptuous towards each other, they worked together for many years.) Netanyahu should salvage the little self-respect he has left and remove Lieberman from the Foreign Ministry, even if not fire him from the Cabinet. Firing Lieberman from the Cabinet will surely bring down the present government. Ideally, this should happen and the Lieberman party should be replaced by Kadima. But given that Netanyahu is a political coward, he should at least terminate Lieberman as FM.
