one should not confuse liberalism and democracy. liberalism is a certain type of ideology. democracy is based on insitutions that guaranty freedoms and liberties: freedom of speech, of assembly of press, of religion; separation of powers, an independent judiciary, civili control of the armed forces. unfortunately, when a country is under attack, it tends to increase controls over the citizenry. when a country is attacked from the inside, by opposing forces, the leadership reacts with less than democratic means. it serves no purpose to lay the blame constantly at the prime minister's feet. the left, including the press, is as much to blame. the press has a tendency to react automatically, without careful analysis and therefore loses its influence. examples: 1 the elections in russia. putin is not a choir boy, but the opposition is mainly hard core communist or fascist. 2 the funding by foreign governments of political ngo's is a disgrace since it is an intereference in the state's sovereignty. 3 the selection of justices to the high court should not be made by members of that very same court. on the other hand, attempts to muzzle the press are outrageous. the so-called price tag actions are outrageous. so is the fact that until now the government has done precious little to arrest the criminals. the attempt by the far right nationalists to justify their crimes is just as scandalous as the attempt of the far left to paint religious zionists as uniformly evil. attempts by the far left to justify arab terror enables the far right to justify their own illegal acts.
