That is always a tense essay & error job. They may get too far astray, or they may not understand the deep-seated feelings that go against updating values and rituals. But they sincerely try their best. You will never hear liberal rabbis, non-orthodox that is, ranting fascist, racist crap. On the contrary, they work for upholding Jewish values. And yes, sometimes that is controversial, sometimes they are wrong, sometimes the miss to please the conventional wisdom. But their work is indeed well-inspired. It would be important for Israelis to shift the focus from throwing eggs at a senile old bigot, to supporting those voices that work for a Judaism that is meaningful, joyful and harmonious with the century we are in.
