No people have yearned for peace and have given up more for peace than the Israelis. The Declaration of Independence of Israel states, "We extend our hand to all neighboring states and their peoples in an offer of peace and good neighborliness, and appeal to them to establish bonds of cooperation and mutual help ..." The response of the Arab world has been a relentless attempt to destroy Israel. Mr. Levy simply has to listen to the words of the government the Palestinians chose when they had a chance at democracy. The evacuation of Gaza was not seen by the Palestinians as a positive action by Israel but a vindication of the tactics of terror and the ultimate goal of destroying the entire state. As long as there is no-one on the Palestinian side who can deliver a reliable peace, Israel must insure the survival of its citizens, even the foolish ones like Levy. As Eli Wiesel said in a letter to a Jewish lawyer defending a Nazi, "Even Jews can be stupid but it is not obligatory."
