    Those who have no knowledge of history are doomed to repeat it, as the well-known saying goes. Let's look at the situation during the war years, 1939 to 1945, in Jerusalem. The British are refusing to let desperate Jewish refugees into Mandate Palestine. They send them back to certain death. This continues after the war. One ship of refugees sinks with the loss of all on board: women, children, old people. The Grand Mufti hobnobs with Hitler in Berlin, where he sits out the war, convinced the Germans will attack Mandate Palestine and win the war. Six million (estimated) Jews are slaughtered in the death camps. Britain, Canada, the USA, refuse to let more than a token handful in. The remnant that actually get to Palestine, thanks to people like Shamir, are the as-yet-unknown foundation of the only place on earth where Jews could be safe. That is the same situation today. And even in Israel, Jewish civilians and soldiers are constantly exposed to rocket and grenade attacks from Gaza, and terrorism at bus stops, restaurants, street corners, check points. But at least nobody is rounding them up and sending them to Auschwitz any more, while the world does nothing.
