There is no question about the "duty to serve", but why in the IDF? There are many ways to contribute to this nation, but, as in the bad old days of Gen-Gurion and his Yevsek kieutenants, the assumption is that a does of a "secular army" will cause otherwise tradtitional Jews to leave "rekigion" for secularism. If indeed Haredim do enter the army, that means many of the current secular norms that have no bearing on speicific military aspects of life will have to change. So . . .. the plan to place women in more responsible postions will have to ditiched, as well as scheduling the day to allow for services and time for Torah study. Indeed, in practice, Haredi solders are often more disciplined performing at higher levels than many secular soldiers on the average. The ultra-Secularists have what to fear from a large contingent of Haredi solders--many of the abuses and practices that reach the press will not appear simply because when Haredim reach postitions of leadership, they treat the army not as as stepping stone to cushy postions in industry and politics, but the organization tha is supposed to defend the the State of Israel from its enemies.
