The author trumps the idea of a unilateral peace showing that the left was always correct, and that the right is just now dealing with realism. I don't see it that way. Israel is able to magnanimously make an offer of peace, if they so desire, only BECAUSE they have pummelled Gaza over the past week. In other words, without a massive display of military power and destruction Israel could never make such an offer. And a long term cease fire is not an enviable end to the conflict. By it's definition, that states that the war is still on, it's just a matter of time. The best leverage Israel has is the threat of killing Hamas' leaders. Only then do Hamas start to think rationally. They have no problem sending others to their deaths but when it comes to themselves, they sing a different tune.
