Axel, I actually doubt that Iran will do much to stop oil shipping thru the Gulf. (But they will cut down their own exports.) They know that this will have such serious repercussions on the West that the US will have to invade them to break such a blockade. The Iranians were unhappy about the US helping Iraq during its war with them. What they did was to plant sea mines in the Gulf. This cannot be remedied by an invasion. (You can drop them from the air too, although the Iranians did it by boat.) The US retaliated by destroying some oil offshore platform, and Iran stopped.
