As a young man I was introduced to the rabbinical genius of Rav Ovadia and too this day I am still in awe of his halachic writings. But as I got older I was disgusted to see Rav Ovadia leverage Torah, Judaism, hatred and fear as political weapons. Perhaps Rav Ovadia will be remembered by more people than will Yitzchak Rabin, I don't know. But for me (someone who staunchly disagreed with Rabin's politics and Oslo), Rabin inspired a kind of hope that has had a much more enduring impact on my life than the intellectual savvy of Rav Ovadia. And as far as role models are concerned, I certainly don't want my children or my students to learn from Rav Ovadia's racism or his hatred of those who are no religious.
