Shallom! I'm the Meracezet Chinuch this year of a Habonim Dror camp in the Midwest. We've been at this for years. This year, on our erev yisrael, we had an evening full of activities themed around the city of Haifa. In addition to engineering games at the "Technion", matkot at the "chof hakarmel" and a diverse group of people chatting at a coffee house in "schunat hadar", some counselors put on a scene from Ghassan Kanafani's "Return from Haifa" and the kids learned about how the Jewish Agency put people in homes that Arabs had fled from. Most of our chanichim know what the word "Nakba" means. At Habonim Dror camps, we know that kids are capable of learning joy and sorrow at the same time. Giving them anything less than a full, honest education is belittling their intelligence.
