BAO LAM (#25) asks good questions. The answer is that Lebanon has never been a viable state, due to the intense hatred between its citizens, including french speaking christian "arabs", rich Sunni Muslims, and an impoverished Shi'a plurality that prevent any effective action by government. Once again it proves that in this day of world terrorism, the most dangerous govenments are weak governments. The region would be much better served if Syria were to absorb Lebanon, since current situation of strong Israel, weak/defenseless Lebanon, and uncontrolled/uncontrollable militant groups of all types is recipe for disaster. Of course, the ultimate defenders of this failure are the French due to emotional and historical connections to the descendents of their frankish crusader ancestors (all part of the foolish myths about themselves that the French cling to).
