There are at least two points that are lost on this blogger from Beirut: 1. In any immigration country there will always be poverty because every new wave of immigration brings along many people who start at the bottom of the socio-economic ladder. That is a major reason why the U.S., for instance, has a lot of poverty, even though it is allegedly "the wealthiest nation on earth". The concept of an immigration country would naturally be alien to an Arab observer because no one ever immigrates to the Arab world. 2. A hefty chunk of Israel's budget goes to defense by necessity. In Lebanon this is not an issue. First, its defense needs are not even a fraction of those of Israel, since it is not under threat, and second, its regular army is non-functional and its only functional military force belongs to Iran.
