Lakshmi, there was no connection in any way between the Minot incident and US foreign policy. It was a major screw-up, but it has no greater import. It was not part of some conspiracy to nuke Syria or Iran. It was not 'stopped' by some counter-coup. The classification of the incident as a "Bent Spear" was correct BECAUSE OF THE POTENTIAL FOR A NEGATIVE PUBLIC RESPONSE, not for any other reason. The known facts are: 1. That 1/2 of the AGM-129s on a plane flying back to Barksdale had the W-80 mod 3 nuclear weapons correctly replaced by the 'blue bomb' training warheads. 2. That for reasons unknown, or not announced, the other 1/2 were not. The officer responsible checked only 1/2 the missiles to ascertain that the warheads had been replaced with dummies. 4. That the aircraft was left unguarded for 15 hours. 5. Then it was flown cross country with nuclear weapons on board but the crew unaware of that fact. The folks who screwed up no longer have their jobs. Simple as that.
