What a travesty. Herzl dreams of a home for the Jewish people. Secular Jews seeking to escape the shtetl, the dead pull of religious authority, and the sewerage of Europeon culture (pograms, anti-Drefusards, Black Hundreds, Cossacks, fascists and the rest) build a land of Israel. Jews from Arab countries pour into the new state sans property to escape the Arab mob. So now, who claims to be the Jewish State? The same dead pull of religious authority the labor zionists tried so hard to escape from, only that dead pull now calls itself religious zionism. And what do they want? They want to ignore the identities of West Bank Palastinains and the reality of 250,000 Palastinains who just happen to live there. They want to sacrifice the safety and security of the State they once dismissed as Jewish goyim when they were davening in the shtetl so that ultra-orthadox can get cheap housing not too far from the Kotel. The truth is that the religious Jerusalem is an ideal that can't be reduced to bricks and stone. The Jerusalem of this world is one with buildings, jobs, infrastructure, and lots of people with different personal narratives, and no one person's identity and emotional needs is ultiamtely more important than the next persons regardless of whether or not they go around in religious drag.. The truth is that all these personal, religious, identity and emotional needs need to be accomodated as best as possible so that real people can live decent lives in this world. And the truth is that to confuse the Jerusalem of the religious ideal with bricks and stone is a form of idolatry.

A milestone birthday is as good an opportunity as any for a midlife crisis about the Middle East crises.
