I do not believe Hamas is a fanatical Islamic group. On the contrary they seem quite pragmatic and propose down to earth solutions, such as the need for a ceasefire in the WB and they have also agreed to let Abbas negotiate peace and put the results to a referendum.I do believe that little is really known about the hard years of work they put in doing social service to the poorer classes in P. and one of the reasons for their popularity. They are also not corrupt, important qualities.I found Dr.Khaled Hroub's book Hamas a Beginner's Guide very useful.Dr.Hroub is a Cambridge scholar and describes himself as a secularist. It is also a recent publication,2006.
