As president of Jewish Vegetarians of North America, I am very happy to learn of the Israeli Knesset providing vegan options. Kol hakavod to Meretz MK Tamar Zandberg for promoting this and indicating why it is so important. I hope this will lead to additional changes in Israel because plant-based diets are most consistent with Jewish mandates to preserve human health, treat animals with compassion, protect the environment, conserve natural resources and help hungry people. Also, animal-based diets and agriculture are causing an epidemic of diseases in the Jewish and other communities, and contributing significantly to climate change and other environmental problems that threaten all of humanity. It is essential that the Jewish community move toward vegan dits to help shift our imperiled planet to a sustainable path.
