Let's look at their language. Israelis are the only active people in this scenario, exagerating their power to control and shape events. Palestinians are reduced to mere victims, with no intent or control. Now let's look at some facts. The alternatives to occupation are complicated and they all involve added risk to Israeli security. While Israel may occupy for more than one reason (religious, territorial, economic), the occupation can only be understood as having, at least in part, security considerations. Conversely, the Palestinians are not passive players. No one doubts that Arafat never intended to establish a liberal democratic state and the events of Gaza demonstrate the fractured and violent nature of that society.
