'Shalom Freedman is lying when he claims Arab Knesset members don`t recognize Israel.' Recalling a broadcast conversation between MK Ephraim Sneh and MK Tewfiq Zayad (now deceased) several years ago. MK Zayad complained of anti-Arab discrimination and MK Sneh suggested that young Arabs do some form of national service, in lieu of Army service, in the Arab sector, in jobs such as teaching, nursing, youth counciling or care-giving. Twefiq Zayad, a salaried Knesset Member, refused emphatically on the grounds that it would be a recognition of State institutions. I think Arab MKs will continue to want their bread buttered on both sides for as long as we allow them to. Their fiery rhetoric may get them elected to cushy Knesset jobs but it also means that Israeli Arabs are represented by people who exploit them, rather than look out for their best interests.
