I won't defend Hezbollah, but I will criticise Israel and the US. The best hope for the region would have been a successful independent and moderate Lebanon. Israel and the US seem to have decided that Israel's security needs are more important. This will all play into the hands of the pro-Syria forces in Lebanon. After the aggression, brutality, callousness and downright meanness (taking out the airport in Beirut?) that Israel and the US have shown in the past 3 weeks, I doubt that it would be politically possible for any future Lebanese government to adopt a pro-Western stance. If anything is clear from the past three weeks, it is that Lebanon needs a patron to protect it from Israel and the US. We may reach this point in a decade or so when Iran has a nuclear bomb. It didn't have to be this way. If only wiser heads had prevailed.
