Gedeon Levy doesn't seem to understand history, sociology, or anything outside the realm of communist philosophy. May I recommend reading some of the writings of Bernard Lewis, probably the foremost authority on Islamic history and thought in the English Language. He eloquently argues that the roots to Islamic fundamentalism and terrorism sprout from a deep depression created by one simple fact: in the middle ages Islamic culture and society were the most progressive in the world and in modernity they are the most impoverished culturaly, technologically, and intellectually. The west, in the eyes of Islam, stole all the glory that was theirs. Now, they will do anything to prove they are worthy. We are in a cultural clash which predates the Olympics and dates back to the importation of coffee from South America and sugar from the West Indes. The Near Eastern states have tried every panacea for their plight: Communism, Socialism, Nationalism, and now fundamentalism and terrorism. You are right, they hate "our" olympics, our movies, our money, our free press, and our freedoms. They don't have them. George Bush tried violently to give them these. If he fails, maybe the fault lies in those who are not prepared to receive the gifts of modernity. Instead of writing, Gideon, read a book, you might be suprised what you find.
