"In recent times, there has been some talk about creating "religious" states in this land.. A state that would exclude or discriminate against the other religions is not suitable for this land made holy by God for all of humanity." - Archbishop Sabbah I think the Archbishop has in mind the requirement, recently raised, that Israel should be recognized by the Palestinians as a Jewish state. He may prefer to look at the requirement as indicating that the Jewish religion should have a preferred status. However, Judaism happens to be both a religion and an ethnos, the ethnos of Jews. An ethnix group is defined by birth and not so much by religion. Things are not so clear cut with resect to Judaism, but somebody should explain to the Archbishop that the requirement of Israel being a Jewish state refers to the ethnos of the Jews, not to their religion. The best thing for Israel will be to separate Church and State, in which case these fears of religious minorities will be removed.
