Incidentally: Roth was not 'an Austrian writer'. He was born in Brody, Galicia, which though part of the Austro Hungarian empire, was a centre of Eastern European Jewish learning. He described himself frequently as an 'Ostjude' , for whom Austro Hungary, with its multiple ethnic communities, was the easiest environment for Jews.
