I think, sadly, that Johnson is correct. How did this situation arise? In 1880, there was a slight majority of Jews in Jerusalem, with millenar roots, well adapted and living friendly with Muslims and Christians. Why did it not stay that way? Along came the crazies from Russia. The Jerusalemite Jews would not have anything to do with them, so they went to Galilee. There they saw the humble fellahin as Amalekites, and they wanted to play little Joshuahs. So it began, and this set the style for everything that followed. No wonder that the Palestinians are angry; this is not the cause but the consequence. I am afraid that the Israeli's only hope is to continue in their self-created stockade, as long as possible, but I hope that a miracle would happen and that some genius would be able to defuse the situation and restore peace, natural between sensate humans.
