If the Church's history is any example (see Pius XII and centuries of forced conversions and anti-semitism), then the appointment of Jean-Marie (nee Aaron) Lustiger as Archbishop of Paris could hardly be seen as some kind of trophy. John Paul II earned himself no friends in the Roman Curia with this particular appointment.
