His father was an isolationist and supported non intervention in Hitler's advances in Europe. And, being a bit of a bigot and anti semite came easily due to his ties to Pope Pius. In those years John was a student and a playboy mostly and not yet formed any opinions of significance. He was influenced by his father, surely, but grew up when he left the senate and ran for president. Despite his failings, he learned from his experiences and I never heard anything bad about him from my Jewish friends and relatives who were all highly sensitive to anti semitism, seeing it in every corner of life and politics.
