Hollingsworth, the politicians you reference are all mainstream liberals, at least in their public faces, not "leftists." Real leftists (the type who, e.g., thought that the U.S. was worse than the Soviet Union, many of whom I met in college, and who nowadays think that the Islamist threat is basically invented by the U.S. so it can have an excuse for imperialism) can't get elected in the U.S., except in university towns and sometimes in urban districts dominated by blacks. Just read the Comments section to ANY leftist blog in the U.S. when there is a post on Israel, and you will see that my syllogism leftists hate Israel, a significant (though not huge) fraction of young Jews are leftists, thus these young Jews must choose between being considered "good leftists" and supporting Israel is true. Folks like Gitlin think the solution is to make their views more palatable to the left, rather than fight within the left to be more understanding of Israel.
