Much as I admire Shabi's book on the Mizrahi Jews in Israel, I disagree with her article. There is a commonality in the refugee question: both sets of refugees were created as a result of the establishment of the state of Israel. In both cases, some people stayed in their country of origin while others, the majority, either fled or were forced to leave through a variety of means. Time of departure is immaterial since there are no Jews left in the Arab lands, except in Morocco. Does she realise that there is an Arab hatred of Jews, not just of Zionists ? I agree though that Arab countries would refuse to even consider the issue of compensation to Jewish refugees. And how would it be administered anyway ?
