Jew is an ethnicity. A jewish person, who eats pork, drives on Sabbath, eats ham and cheese sandwiches remains a Jew. A Jew, who converts to Hinduism is still an ethnic Jew. That's why the Nazis had killed the Jews as an ethnic group - they never verified whether the Jews praciticed Judaism or not. They just saw dark sad eyes, bigger noses (sometimes), dark hair (sometimes curly), etc... Anne Frank didn't look like a German girl, she looked Jewish and her family didn't practice Judaism. In the USSR internal passport under item #5 it was written "nationality" and in my passport it was written "Jew". It didn't mean religion as all Soviet people shouldn't have believed in God and in case of Jews even for learning and teaching Hebrew one could receive 5 years in Siberia. Other people had "Russian" or "Ukrainian", etc, but it didn't mean religion. Yes, there are people, who convert, but it's a very small minority, usually a family member. But it's very very hard to convert to Judaism. One must learn Torah and understand the laws of Judaism and it takes years.
