    Jesus did not set out to establish a new religion. He was a Jewish reformer reacting to the religious hypocrisy of his time and strict adherence to the letter of the law past the point of absurdity (ultra orthodoxy). The embellishment and promotion of the man to the level of God came later, in writings that were produced long after he died. Paul, born Saul, was a major factor in putting together Christianity. Edward L. Gelbum once said to me, "If Saul had not changed his name and had kept going to synagogue, both Jews and Christians would be better off."
