This is an old mine may have even been placed their by Syria before 1967 or by Israel not long after the war when it started securing its new borders in the north and south. Also this couldn't have been part of the UN security zone because that area is supposed to be a demilitarised zone and the IDF were on a training exercise when this happen and the IDF do not train in the UN zone. Israel didn't know it was there necessarily because the thing about minefields is unless they are carefully mapped which doesn't always happen in wartime then there can always be some that remain undiscovered which is why some people want them to be banned in warfare like chemical weapons are. Israel has said it will no longer use anti personal mines ( for killing soldiers ) although it will continue using anti tank mines for destroying vehicles. The IDF have also been making an effort to clean up old minefields. What happened here is a tragedy not something to condemn Israel over.
