Israel has controlled the west bank and Gaza since 1967. All entry and exit in these territories are controlled, all materials controlled, and life and death determined by the IDF, I would say that is a prison. The mantra that Israel withdrew and then the rockets started. But they were still in prison, so what changed? They are in the same prison but no longer with an Israeli population inside. When the Palestinians held an election, Israel refused to recognize the results. Israel seems to think that it must approve who can, and cannot be elected to office. Somewhat like the Iranian supreme council does. Hamas has said that it would abide by any peace deal that ABBAS made. It also renounced suicide bombers. But Israel would refuse to talk with Abbas if Hamas were included in the PLA. Israel held the Gaza Palestinians in prison long before Hamas appeared on the scene. Furthermore, the PLO once had a charted similar to Hamas. They evolved over time to take a more moderate position. Why shouldn?t Hamas if given the opportunity?
