I got my Ph.D. from Georgetown and subsequently taught there for a decade or so. I never got to know Jan Karski. Like everyone else, I just went around in awe of the slender, dignified man in the gray suit. He retired. His wife died. Then one day a student took some mail out to him, found him sitting alone, going blind, desolate. After that, the school arranged to have people look in on him from time to time and keep him company if he wanted it. A great hero. But out of sight is out of mind, even for great heroes at the end of their lives. One can only imagine what thoughts and feelings he had. Philip Gold Karmiel
