Jacobson is a fine writer and I have enjoyed his work in the past. But his extremely protective attitude to Israel is hard to take: yes, of course the setting up of Israel and the expansion into the West Bank are colonial activities. Further, he has an asymmetric approach to criticism of Israel: on the one hand he refuses to criticise Israeli actions, apparently with no limits, and on the other he is explosively critical of anyone who does voice concerns about Israeli actions. Unfortunately, on the subject of Israel, his myopia makes him an unreliable source.
