We certainly can't give up the Golan now. What happens if Assad is toppled by the Muslim Brotherhood in Syria who are organized and who do want him out? What would happen if they formed an alliance with Hizbollah and they allowed Iran to build a military base in the Golan despite the fact it was against the terms of the treaty? The Syrian military is weak but the Iranian one is not. We could find ourselves in a situation where there are Iranian tanks with their guns pointed at the Galilee or Iranian jets so close to Israel they could be dropping bombs in northern Israel before our pilots could get to their planes. As the author points out parts of Judea & Samaria are within range of Ben Gurion airport. All it takes is the downing of a single ELAL jet to destroy the economy overnight because nobody wants to come on vacation to Israel if there is a risk their plane will be shot down. Foreign companies would no longer invest in Israel because they would worry about could they fly their goods out to export abroad without getting shot down so they would leave Israel. How can any responsible government take a risk like that? Sure we can sign treaties but what guarantee do we have that everybody will honor that treaty? What started in Egypt has just made any deals with anybody twice as hard as they were before.
