Neither side is ready at this point for finding and leveraging the interests of both parties. Neither is willing to see the interests of the other, only their own. The Palestinians have presented Israel with issues which it cannot accept now and should be tackled much further down the road. Meanwhile Israel is making motions of coming up with proposals while settlement expansion continues and changes on the ground occur every day. Goodwill gestures are not going to cover up settlement expansion. Demands for Right of Return are not going to be accepted at this stage of the game. And Hamas, which represents half of the Palestinians, is not in the picture at all. This unfortunately is not a starting point that is going to lead to much. It would be enough for a start if both sides went to Annapolis and set a date to stop the violence on both sides. That would be a first step that has to accompany us throughout the process, if we ever get if off the ground.
