The official justification for Operation Cast Lead was that it was necessary to stop the qassam rockets, a conviction that is echoed by many who have written their comments here. One person said that policemen should be considered legitimate targets because they did not stop the rockets. This is not borne out by the numbers. Rocket and mortar attacks fell by 98% after the July 2008 armistice and only began again after an attack by the IDF on what they claimed was a tunnel meant for offensive purposes, during which they killed several people. The event was generally overlooked because it took place when the USA elected their first black president and attention was diverted from Gaza. For numbers, see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_rocket_and_mortar_attacks_in_Israel_in_2008 Perhaps, if the intention really was to end rocket attacks on Southern Israel, a good idea would have been to continue things as they were between July and December 2008.
