    I agree completely with you. The word "religion" comes from latin "religare", "relier" in french, which means "to connect". A religion, by its narrative and rituals, connects people together to make from these individuals a unique nation. The religious factor in the jewish people is minor, has been minor in antiquity, become major in dispersion, become again minor with the rebirth of the state of Israel.
