Since Israel has not met its Road Map obligations to cease settlement expansion in the West Bank and has not proposed borders, what other option do the Palestinians have in the U.N. than to strive for nonmember state recognition? It's President Abbas who they have to negotiate and reach an agreement with so why burn all your bridges? It's hopeful that this move would set momentum towards negotiations after the U.S. elections and indeed, President Abbas stated he would enter peace talks subsequent to a positive gesture in the U.N. In reality, the two-states resolution to the conflict would become a reality to those who oppose a compromising peace in the Middle East.
