With the best will in the world it's hard to see Abbas' decision to abandon Goldstone in a good light. What was he promised by the US? The PA might get some US cash out of it, but it's hard to se what else. Netanyahu has no intention of making serious concessions to the Pals whether the Goldstone report proceeded or not. In fact, if the Goldstone report had proceeded Israel would have been in a much weaker position internationally and it's far more likely Netanyahu would have had to make concessions to the Pals. Bibi must be lughing his head off right now. Sadly, as always with Bibi, it's short-term gain and long-term disaster. This affair has seriously damaged Abbas, perhaps fatally, and has boosted the extremists among the Pals. This too, in the short term Bibi is probably happy with. His coalition will find it easier to fight Pals than negotiate with them. However, long term it just makes a 2 state solution less likely and a unitary Arab and Jewish Isratine, even more likel
