The big picture is quite complicated and no one really can predict the wide range of consequences now taking place, some overtly others covertly; or how power blocks are being realigned by changing circumstances. When politicians and generals believe they have control of all possible outcomes of their actions, and believe they have the know how and the means to anticipate and remedy chance outcomes they more times than not fail to realize their predictions. This is why catastrophic wars have occurred so often in the past. And this is why the innocent become the victims of so-called statesmen and generals. The war in Syria has been going on for over 2 years---there is obviously more that is going on than meets the eye.
