A Harvard psychologist, interviewed about the psychological factors underlying this lopsided exchange, explained how emotion can overrule logic. Anyone with basic common sense knows, or should know, that this exchange will only lead to more terrorism, more attempted kidnappings, and much more bloodshed. Even a cursory knowledge of Jewish law (starting with the Mishnah that states that one is forbidden to ransom captives for higher than the 'going rate,' continuing on to the story of the Maharam of Rotenberg, who refused to allow himself to be ransomed for an excessive amount of money, dying in prison as a result, and continuing through dozens of cases in our long history) would realize the folly of this rash act. The Roths are wonderful people and they have established a foundation to help special needs children, in memory of their daughter. Koby Mandell's parents have done the same (Koby was brutally beaten to death with stones at a young age). Please consider getting involved with these organizations. The Jewish response to hate is to increase love and kindness.
