Israel (as the name implies) is a country for which the sole purpose was and is to be a refuge for the descendants of Israel (the Jews). History has shown time and time again that for some obscure reason, Jews end up being scapegoated by their fellow citizens whenever a crisis arises. This was the case when unemployment went up before the second world war. This was the case when Arab countries fell into poverty (again). This was the case when the financial crisis of the 30s hit the world like a hammer. And to some extend this was the case during the financial crisis that we have just experienced. The Jews are being blamed for all bad things especially in the Muslim world. Besides being the historical correct place for a Jew to live, Israel exists to protect the Jews from such scapegoating. There they can defend themselves. There they can protect their heritage and culture. And there they can develop their language and religious practices. But to do so, it requires them to be able to define and clearly say: This is Israel - the home of the Jewish people. If you don't like to live in a Jewish country, there are plenty of countries in the world that define themselves as Christian, Islamic, purely democratic, Islamo-democratic, Christian-democratic, technocratic, communistic etc. etc. etc. If even for the shortest period of time in history, I urge the people of the world to give the Jews a break from scapegoating and let them define themselves as they wish.
