What exactly would Hamas be recognizing in the event that it recognizes Israel? Would it be Israel as outlined in the UN partition plan? Perhaps the Israel of pre-67 borders? How about the Israel with annexed West Bank settlements? Better still, why not the Nile-to-the-Euphrates-Israel-on-Steroids envisioned by some? Which Israel do you mean, Mr. Beilin? By demanding recognition of an undefined entity (surely a contradiction in terms!) as a pre-condition to negotiations, Israel is demanding a blank cheque, which she will fill in later, according to her whims and desires. This smells of obstructionism, with a hint of stupidity.
