In the UK, reform and liberal Jews do not have to be subservient to the United synagogue, representative of mainstream orthodoxy. This does not mean that the community is divided and leaderless, just that we can practice our Judaism as we choose without becoming second or third-class Jews if we are not part of the orthodox movement. I recommend Israel tries it!
